Hotpoint
Buying a Hotpoint Dishwasher
Hotpoint as a Manufacturer
Part of the Indesit Company, Hotpoint has earned an outstanding reputation for high quality domestic appliances including their range of dishwashers. Hotpoint produces appliances which are both practical and which are designed for real world use. Despite competitive prices, Hotpoint products also have a reputation for durability.
Dishwasher Dimensions
Whilst smaller 'counter top' dishwashers are usually a compact 45 x 55 x 45 cm in size and can cater for some 4 place settings, full-size machines measure around 82cm high x 90cm wide x 58cm deep and most cater for around 12 or 14 place settings. Many manufacturers offer 'slimline' models which are specifically designed for applications where width is an issue. These are generally around 45cm wide and can cater for 7 or 8 place settings. Fully integrated models also tend to be less deep to allow for proper integration with standard kitchen worktop depths. Whatever model or style you choose, make sure that you have measured the available space carefully!
Other Key Features and Things to Consider
- Energy Efficiency
- With today's focus on environmental issues, it is not surprising that current dishwashers generally consume less energy than washing the dishes by hand! Whatever machine you choose, avoid pre-rinsing dishes under the hot tap; ensure that you fully load the dishwasher before running it; use 'off-peak' electricity where available; use the economy cycle when dishes are not too soiled and connect the machine to the cold rather than the hot water supply.
- Guarantee
- All manufacturers give a twelve month parts and labour guarantee. Many brands offer extended guarantees but these may require that you use their own engineers - at a higher cost than independent engineers.
- Half Load
- Many dishwashers have a 'half load' function, allowing you to ask the dishwasher to wash a smaller load in the top tray only. Energy-wise it is always best to fill the dishwasher as certain elements operate fully whether or not you are running a half load.
- Noise
- As with most current dishwashers, Hotpoint machines run quietly. As a guide, 50 db or below is generally held to be an acceptable noise level.
- Programmes and Temperature
- All dishwashers have a regular cycle. Most machines also offer a rinse and a delicate cycle using lower temperatures. The temperature should be 55°C at most (although some may have a higher temperature during the drying cycle). Reducing temperature from 65°C to 55°C lowers energy consumption by a quarter and you should avoid using the drying cycle when washing very delicate glasses for example.
- Reliability and Longevity
- Hotpoint dishwashers have a solid reliability track record. You should also think about lifetime costs - cheaper brands may seem to cost less to buy but may require more engineer time and not last as long, therefore costing more over their lifespan.
- Timer Function
- Many people have the option to use 'off-peak' electricity at reduced rates (generally at night). If this is true for you, look at machines with a delay / timer function that tells the machine to hold off until a specific time before starting, thus reducing energy consumption and your costs.
- Water Supply
- Both water and heating are expensive. This is why a dishwasher with low water consumption is better in this regard. Nearly all dishwashers can be connected to either cold or hot water feeds. Connecting to the cold supply uses less energy because water is only heated in the machine during the cleaning final rinse - but it does lengthen the cycle. In contrast, when you connect to the hot water supply, the dishwasher uses hot water with all sequences including rinsing and pre-washing.
- Water Softener
- Those living in hard water areas will probably be familiar with calcium stains on glasses and cutlery. Most current dishwashers include a built in water softener, using iodine free salt. Some advanced models offer an electronically controlled softener which is activated only when needed.
- Other Functions / Options
- Features and options vary depending upon the manufacturer. Examples include movable upper trays; special glass, vase and bottle holders; and child safety features.
